Al Jourgensen
(Ministry founder and leader)
"I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only
was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our
condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by
artists, musicians and his fans the world over.
The one consolation is knowing Raven's already hooked up with the right people
and started a new project in the After Life. Godspeed, Raven. Rest In Peace, you
fucking pirate."
Tommy Victor
(Ministry guitarist, Prong founder and leader)
"Paul Raven was a grand-master of our cult, high up in the inner sanctum
sanctorum. His status can never be forgotten, nor his presence replaced. One of
our heroes. An unbelievable loss, but we are always going to laugh and smile in
remembrance...exactly how he would have wanted it."
Sin Quirin
(Ministry guitarist, Rev Co guitarist)
"I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes because you're not physically with us
anymore. I can't believe you're not here and it hurts a lot man...but at the same
time I can't help but smile at all the good times we had together. Those are the
memories I'll always carry with me and I know you'll be smiling down on me as
well. Not only were you a badass musician, you were one of my great, genuine
friends. I'm going miss you Raven, but you'll never be forgotten and you'll
always be with us."
John Bechdel
(Ministry keyboardist, False Icons vocalist)
"Although I too am shocked and deeply saddened at the tragic loss of such a close comrade, I can't help feeling joy because he truly lived life to the fullest. He touched so many lives in his brief time here. My mind is swimming with all the wonderful memories of him, my dear friend Paul Raven."
Burton C. Bell
(Ministry vocalist, AotW vocalist, Fear Factory vocalist)
"I will miss my friend dearly, and I will think of him fondly throughout my days
until we meet on the other side."
Jaz Coleman and Geordie Walker
(Killing Joke vocalist and guitarist)
"We are all deeply stricken with grief at the unannounced departure of possibly
the funniest man on planet Earth and a brother to us all, Paul Vincent Raven. Unimaginable sadness is felt by all."
Daniel Jon Raven
(Paul's brother)
"We are in deep shock and we miss him a great deal. We love him."
The expression 'one of a kind' has lost its value but my beautiful brother, Paul Vincent Raven, redefined it. He was a one-man army, as intelligent, funny, loving and singularly angry a man as I have ever known. His life was truly his own, from its beginning to this awful, tragic end. He was a born saint and an unbelievable asshole. This family's heart is bleeding and it will never stop. To know that we will never hear his voice and see his face again is a wound that nothing will heal. We would like to thank Paul's friends and comrades for their invaluable support at this impossible time."
Ted Parsons
(Jesu drummer)
"It deeply saddens me to tell you that legendary bass player and friend Paul Raven died yesterday morning of a heart failure in Geneva, Switzerland at around 6:00 a.m. Paul and myself were invited to play on the new Treponem Pal album in Geneva for a week. After a long day of recording, the band went out for drinks to celebrate Paul's arrival and reminisce. We then went back to the house we were staying and I went to bed the other guys stayed up. I found Raven asleep in a chair the next morning in the living room. I thought nothing of it as Raven would sleep like this on the tour bus in the front lounge all the time. Then I looked closer at him and he looked very gray. I checked his pulse and there was none. I yelled for the other guys in the band. We immediately did some CPR and called for an ambulance. Medics arrived quickly but after an hour of trying to get his heart beat back they could not save him. They said he died in his sleep probably around 6 a.m. It was then 9:30 a.m. We made a lot of great music together. Words can't describe how I feel right now. I'm devastated. He will be missed by many. He was the king of the one-liners. Please send Raven and his family love and light."
Marco Neves
(Treponem Pal vocalist)
"Dans notre coeur pour toujours. I met this guy 15 years ago. The feeling from the very beginning was a very strong connection. He was a true human, very optimistic and living life at 1000 % . Our vision of music and our taste opened up in different ways, to a lot of different sounds and colors, which is so important to create something original, to bring us out of the same classic 'routine'. He was a true rebel, a real 'rude boy'.... coming up on stage with such an infectious energy to offer. He was using music as a weapon. Most importantly was the way he loved to share everything with his friends and all people in general. He was a, very unique human being, an original freedom fighter! Paul, you will forever be tattooed in our hearts! Rest in Peace!!!"
Jim Macfarlane
(Paul's brother-in-law)
"When I think of Raven I think about his passion for music and his great sense of humor. I have always been a shuck and jive jokester and Paul was one of the few that could hold his own and loved taking me on and making cracks of his own. Some of the stuff he came up with was just hilarious!! Paul knew how much I love The Scorpions and ZZ Top. He seemed to love poking a stick at me on how I thought stuff was cool that was everyday for him. He texted me from Vegas one night and said he was drinking with Herman Rarebell (ex-Scorpions drummer) just to rub my face in it and tease me. Paul called me from Texas one night to tell me that Billy Gibbons was going to hit the stage with Ministry on one of the opening nights of the Rio Grande Blood album tour and play 'Just got Paid' as a cover. Paul thought Billy Gibbons was it! For some reason Billy didn't end up playing and Paul was bummed about that. ZZ Top was recently here in the NorthWest on tour. Paul and I talked about going and Paul pointed out the added incentive that it we didn't go, we were going to have to go to a 'fucking wine tasting party' with my sisters (HA HA!). Paul kept texting me to find some tickets and that if I failed we were 'both going to pay with the wine party'. I found two awesome tickets front and center and we went. Paul had a blast! He kept telling me this and that and little tid-bits of what he knew about the band. He took a ton of pix on his cell and he acted like a little kid the way he was idolizing Billy Gibbons. At one point he went out to grab us some beers and when he came back he had one of his famous twinkles in his eyes and he had me hold the beers and he pulled two ZZ Top shotglasses out of his pocket and he said, 'How fucking cool are these!?...ZZ Top shotglasses!!' What a great night that was and I'm so glad to have those memories. I still can't believe he is gone. Paul's impact on my family and my sisters was immense. Paul and I never ever had one bad issue or one bad word between us. He was a true bro and I miss him!"
Chris Connelly
(solo artist, Murder Inc., Ministry and Rev Co vocalist)
"Raven embodied my idea of Rock - the fun, the volume, the pirate antics & the hi-jinx. One of my most enduring images has always been when I would be in 'full flight' singing onstage, taking myself VERY seriously and Raven would come up behind me and whisper something hilarious in my ear, walking away, playing with his trademark impish grin...he was a beautiful soul with a giant heart. He leaves many who love him very, very much."
Jonathan Henry Ward
(Paul's cousin, Maycomb and Walko and the Mysterons guitarist)
"I loved Paul very much and I am still in shock. He was a massive influence on me. He was an amazing person and was loved by many. All my friends that were lucky enough to meet him have said how he made them feel so welcome so quickly. He was a warm, kind and generous person. I remember when he lived with me for about three months when I was 15/16 years old, and I think he made a huge impact on my life. I remember rushing home with new Amy Fell Over demos that we'd just recorded, knowing that he'd love them regardless of how good they were. I remember the excitement of going to show him my first tattoo! I remember how lucky I felt whenever the band he was touring with were stopping off in Wolverhampton or Birmingham. I remember him nagging at me to help my mom around the house. I am completely and utterly overwhelmed at the resopnse to his death. Now, two days later, the intenet, radio, and newspapers are full of the news. I've seen hundereds of Myspace pages all made in tribute to him. I've heard presenters telling the story of his death, just hours after I had found out. News websites like MTV and BBC have front page stories, and each new article reveals more information than I was aware of. I actually can't believe the sheer number of people Raven reached... both through friendship, and music. Peers and fans alike all showing resepct and sharing condolences. I am overwhelmed. The man was clearly a legend. I didn't know how to pay tribute to a man that has had such a huge impact on so many people's lives. Nonetheless, I feel compelled to share as much as I can about Raven and to celebrate his life. I love him and I will miss him. Rest In Piece - Paul Vincent Raven."
Luc Van Acker
(Rev Co vocalist)
"I'm numb, sad and everyday I'm fighting the reality you're not among us anymore. Holding on to memories, feeling a bit awkward as they make me smile...always awake ...always 100% ready...to ROCK! Strange how certain people can take such an important place and meaning in our life...you don't have to see them everyday...just the knowledge they 'exist' and are in your heart, making you stronger and less afraid...forever. I call them friends...Paul called them brothers...I lost a BIG Brother...BIG BEAR HUG."
Liz Constantine
(Ministry guest vocalist, Dizzy X vocalist)
"'Khyber Pass' was everyone's baby...but most especially Raven's...I knew that...(it was whispered to me in a dirty, dusky bathroom). To be chanting and channeling on this passionate piece of music was a Godsend...to say the least. I also knew that the day I sang at Donnelly's (DNA Mastering) I had stepped into a parallel universe of enormous passion and purpose. When I was onstage with Ministry, I would often look to Raven for assurance and Pirate/Rock/Love....he was always there, giving me the assurance that only brothers and sisters of Rock know....the assurance that we ARE on the right path, fighting the good fight! A synergy of energy between Al, Tommy, Joey, Mikey, John and Raven made it possible for me to translate the encoded 'messages' that I have kept inside for so long...and for this I am grateful...forever. I loved him in the short time I knew him and so did Dante. This, his passing, has caught us by surprise but I know he has done his work (the Ox, my brother's year) and now he reaps the benefits."
Liz Allen
(Paul's sister)
"A sterling memory of Paul involves us dodging the afternoon traffic in Wolverhampton city centre to get to a graphic novel/action figure store. That day Paul had come round to visit me and our Dad. I remember looking at them as we sat talking and thinking how alike they were - like bookends, slouched in identical poses and mirroring each others' gestures. Paul was terrific company, chatting non-stop about his friends, his kids, his work and his dogs. When we got to the store after Dad had dropped us off in town, Paul pointed at the replica firearms and cackled 'Ha! I've got real versions of all those!' He then showed me his gun licence and I teased him, saying it looked more like a library card. Just before he left, he gave us big rib-crushing bear hugs and told us he loved us. We love you too, Paul."
Mob Research
(Kory Clarke, Mark Gemini Thwaite, Legion Davies, Paul Raven-R.I.P.)
"He was a great friend to many and a legendary bass player. We shall all miss Paul incredibly. We are still in a state of shock, and our sincerest condolences go out to his friends and family. Any messages of condolence are welcomed. We love and miss you man..."
Mark Gemini Thwaite
(Mob Research and The Mission guitarist)
"Although I'd known Paul for nearly 20 years, I had really gotten much closer to him as we started work on Mob Research this year. He was so excited about the future of the band and we hoped to have the record out by Spring 2008. His enthusiam and determination to make things happen was infectious and I shall miss him greatly. His sense of humour was priceless and, both hailing from the same part of the midlands in England, we shared many a brummie and black country joke together. The rock world has lost one of its most shining sons, may he have gone to a better place."
Wayne Hussey
(The Mission founder and leader)
"Raven was one of the good guys. He became a good friend of Mick Brown first and then gradually I got to know him and we got on very well. He was always encouraging, loved music, talking about it and playing it. The last time I heard from him was a month or so ago. Ironically he emailed me to tell me that it was 'a very nice thing to do to post a news message on MWIS about the death of a fan (Ashira)'. He also went onto say that he loved the idea of the Shepherds Bush shows and was gonna try to get to at least one or two of them. I shall miss him. I liked him a lot."
Warrior Soul
(Kory Clarke, John H., Mike McNamara, Rille Lundell and Rob Stephenson aka "Stevo")
"The Warrior Soul crew would like to extend their sincere condolences to the friends and family of Paul Raven."
Paul Ferguson (aka "Big Paul")
(Killing Joke, Warrior Soul, Transmission drummer)
"I am hugely saddened by the death of our brother in arms Paul Raven. I offer his family my heartfelt condolences. It is a testament to his unique character that he is remembered so fondly by so many. Rest in Peace my friend."
Prong
(Tommy Victor, Monte Pittman and Aaron Rossi)
"Words can't describe the grief we are all feeling from this loss. Everyone is sick over it. Paul Raven will be remembered as one of the greatest bass players ever. Sharp, precise tone and skill that could rattle the deepest ocean floor. May his music live forever. Thanks for the music, the laughs, and the memories. Rest In Peace Brother!"
Aleph Kali
(Smartyr)
"Thou hast become a Free-man of the City of the Stars. I've been trying to wrap my head around this one all day. Such a tragic loss of life. He touched so many people with both his music and a great sense of humour. Was was truly one of the most 'full of life' people that I've ever met. The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long, I guess. My Brother, you will be greatly missed."
Gundogs
(Bird, Chris, Maria, Dan Raven)
"Paul will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him...a true legend has been lost but will never be forgotten. God Bless Paul."
Casey Chaos
(Amen founder and leader)
"Paul Raven was someone I looked up to as a child, for his music, his unique style, inspiration, and I was fortunate enough to call him one of my best friends over the last 10 years. If not for Paul Raven, Amen would probably not even exist. Paul was the first person to put his money where is mouth was and produce the first Amen album, and even take Amen out on tour to open for Killing Joke in America in 2004. To commemorate Paul's life, Amen will be dedicating our Halloween appearance at London's Underworld and the remaining dates of our impromptu UK tour to him, in celebration of a punk legend. In Paul's giving spirit it will be a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of a life unparalleled. Amen would like to sincerely send our best wishes to his loved ones, friends, family, and to the fans who will never hear any else who could play bass like Paul Raven, for he will be truly missed by all, whether you know it or not."
Leanne Keefer Bechdel
(Wife of Ministry keboardist)
"Raven spent many years touring and often slept anywhere but in his bunk, usually a couch in the lounge. Always carrying his goofy side around for laughs. Raven knew the best tattoo shops, bars, comic book stores, and odd hole in the wall places the world over. Never lost, as every city was familiar to him in his some twenty years of touring. Raven is missed by his parents and brother, five children, spouses, family, friends and many fans across the world."
Mike Coles (aka "Colesy")
(Killing Joke artist, Malicious Damage Records founder)
"We'll miss him deeply. Paul, remember driving back from that Headcount session, all singing along at full blast to Rockin' All Over The World, creased up with laughter? I'll treasure that forever. God bless mate."
Tim Randle (aka "Rook")
(solo artist and Kitsch vocalist)
"I was saddened to hear of the untimely death of my Black Country brother Paul Raven (Pinky Halls/Riot Star) on 20.10.07 from a suspected heart attack. The Rave was a true Rock'n'Roll pirate with a real infectious enthusiasm for life. T'was back in the early 80's when I was playing in a band called Weird Girlfriend with the one and only Tyla on guitar. We were scratching around causing as much havoc as we could in a small Midland town when through a friend of a friend we were introduced to Jim Crosbie and Paul Raven. They were trying to reconstruct a mashed up band called Burnt Out Stars. Needless to say were all got on ridiculously well thanks to our mutual indulgencies but most of all we shared a heavy love of gutteral music. Within weeks we left everything else by the wayside, joined forces and moved up to London Town. Paul gave me my first leather jacket and turned me on to the New York Dolls. His musical skills, attitude and inspiration were integral to what Kitsch were about. He was a people person, he spread himself far and wide and had an uncanny knack of falling flat on his feet. It was easy to love him thanks to his ability to make you feel welcome and relaxed and his highly infectious sense of humour. But in another breath he could be a pain in the ass at times, but it was easy to forgive him for that, he was treading his own path. Of course you will all know of his adventures from thereon, the amazing amount of bands and projects he worked with, his energy and creative flow was relentless. My thoughts are for his immediate & extended family all around the world. I feel honoured to have been touched by Paul's kindness and friendship and now our beloved Riot Star is bear hugging a new universe."
Anders Odden
(Celtic Frost guitarist)
"We will always remember the man!"
Michael Ciravolo
(Schecter Guitar Research)
"We at Schecter are sadded at the passing of our good friend and long time endorser Paul Raven. As bassist for Killing Joke, Prong and Ministry his talent, influence and sense of humor will be truly missed. Raven was truly one-of-a-kind!"
Headcount
(Rob Moss, Stef Hale and Jeffrey)
"We mourn the passing of our dear friend Paul Raven. We shall miss his kindness, humour and wisdom. RIP mate."
Blaise Merino
(Tribazik vocalist and bassist)
"Such devasting news which touches all of us that knew you and were inspired by your passion, humour and love of life and music. I still laugh at you trying to play your bass upright on tour with KJ! Great memories being on tour with you. My thoughts are with your family in this impossible time. Raven's death is a tragic loss and is difficult to comprehend. His sense of humour, enthusiasm and attention to details will be greatly missed by all those that met him and were able to enjoy his passion for music and life. I respected him greatly. My deepest condolences to his family."
Steffan Chirazi
(Official 13th Planet Photographer)
"He had a big heart. Like a bear...like a big grizzly teddy bear. He stood tall and straight up, never slouching, always towering, always looking even bigger than he was. You expected a roar everytime he opened his mouth a big roar from the big hearted big tall man,but more often than not, Raven would instead speak with that soft midland/London accent, deep, yes, but not overbearing. He liked a laugh and a cackle, and he liked people...and people very much liked him. He played and composed like an anarchic savage and a four-string shamen in the best possible sense. No time for authority. No time for convention. No time for the suits. No time for the obvious. Raven was a gunslinger in the true punk sense. Always moving. Never sitting still. Project after project, tribe after tribe, pack after pack. He'd seek, discover and assimilate. And that beautiful, rumbling sound! Larger than the largest life, rolling all seismic-like, an underpinning to break backs and move music to different places. His eyes always had a twinkle in them. A glint of mischief, a shimmer of cheeky brazen rascalage still allowed to express itself freely, and he was a deviant in the best possible way, never conforming to the conventional and only conforming to the needs of his tribes, always helping them express what those needs were..."
Amy Abattoir
(Artist)
"I met Paul Raven through Burton C Bell in Holland touring with Godflesh
and Fear Factory. He looked a bit scary at first glance, stomping in from the
cold in a big puffy parka all ominous and street thug-like with Justin Broadrick
and Ted Parsons all sweeties looking like a motley crew. I immediately liked him
through chats in cafes and backstage rooms etc. It was exciting to be with him,
like you had an edge over your surroundings somehow. He could definitely find
his way around a cafe menu. His was very magnetic with a cool gravelly English
voice. I ran into him several times thereafter in various cities. Once while
riding a bike through downtown L.A. with Burt. He pulled over in his SUV for a
chat in the middle of traffic on Alvarado Street. He was totally incongruous yet
fit in everywhere. He said some very nice things to me in the short times I knew
him, and cheered me up on a particularly sad Christmas in a thoughtful email.
You could connect with him quickly to the level he was offering. The naughty
pirate in him was evident. I really liked him."
Tribazik
(Blaise Merino, Jerry Kandiah and Hedge Seel)
"We are deeply saddened and shocked by the death of Paul Raven. He supported Tribazik with great enthusiasm, making it a pleasure for us to be on tour with him and the Killing Joke brothers. We will remember him for his sense of humour and passion for life and music, always on the search for something special. Our thoughts go out to his family at this devastating time."
Dennis Mollan
(Pro Tone Pedals)
"When we heard the news of Paul Raven's passing this weekend it was as if all of us had been kicked in the gut. I personally was not prepared for such overwhelming grief. Having worked closely with Paul over the last year and a half we cannot begin to express our profound sadness. We grew a bond based in creativity but grounded in the business world, and watching Raven weave the two was a joy. As many have said over the weekend he was one of the good ones. A Rock N Roll pirate, a freedom fighter, a creative spirit that will not be stopped. We send our best wishes to Paul's friends, family, and most importantly to his children."
Reza
(Killing Joke keyboardist)
"Today I found out that my good friend Paul Raven passed away early this morning. Paul was a very amazing man, who I loved and trusted very much. He always had great ideas, ventures and always looked out for me, as if I were a little brother to him. I was very fortunate to be in contact with him several times in his last week and I had great conversations with him, we laughed and joked, which was an integral part of his personality. We had so much more to do, especially with his own personal project Mob Research, which I know he was extremely excited about. I don't know what more to say, as this is such an unexpected happening for me, as we were only talking a short time ago.. I can't believe he is gone. Paul will be greatly missed by music fans, friends and mostly his family; his bands will miss him terribly.. He was a great man and a unique bass player who has died at such a tragically early age. Love to you brother.. I miss you."
Bill Kennedy
(producer, engineer)
"I am so sad to find out one of my very best friends, Paul Raven, passed away today. He was the ledgendary bass player for Killing Joke, Prong, Ministry... RIP my Brother. Love You."
Charlie Clouser
(composer, producer, engineer, programmer, Nine Inch Nails keyboardist)
"A friend of mine passed away this morning. Paul Raven, Killing Joke/Prong. I did a few things for these bands, remixes, programming, etc. I'm deeply saddened. Goodbye Raven."
Eric Powell
(16 Volt founder and leader)
"I am still reeling from the horrible news that my friend, our friend, Paul Raven has passed away. Raven was an inspiration and a fucking absolute hero. he lived his life on his own terms and he lived it with a passion for music that was never filtered by any other desire but to make some bad ass noise. He worked with the largest bands and the smallest bands with the same drive and unmatched fervor. He gave rock -n- roll his all and in the end his mark will never fade. I am deeply saddened that he is no longer here but i am honored to have known him when he was. I'll miss you brother."
Matt Green
(Spahn Ranch founder and leader)
"I will fondly remember Raven anytime in the future that I see: plaid suits and shiny red shoes, a cello bass, baby pit bulls running through my apartment and nibbling on my feet (?!?), someone saying 'Arrrrrchbishop' while burping, etc. Paul Raven was a great bastard who always had encouraging words for his friends. In a city like L.A., it felt like cash in your pocket."
Trevor Hurst
(Econoline Crush vocalist)
"There was a moment just before the massive wave of sadness that I smiled. In that split second I was happy and proud that even in death Paul Raven went out on his own terms in a very rockstar fashion. A village in France...?? I am sure he is pleased, perhaps not with the timing but with the scene. I know those of us left behind are mourning the loss of a unique and wonderful human being. A character whose larger than life personality captivated us all. I was introduced to Paul Raven via a phone conversation regarding the lyrics to a Killing Joke song, 'Psyche', back when we recorded the song for our first EP 'Purge'. Paul was the bass player in KJ and I thought he might be able to help me with a few of the lyrics. We were friends from that point forward. Everything I ever did with Paul was an adventure and we went on plenty. I never would have survived LA if it wasn't for him. He made an insane city seem fun and exciting. I don't know what to say or how to say it. I am going to miss my friend."
Jordy Trachtenberg
(poet, writer)
"We were in the middle of a pecan orchard at Sonic Ranch, covered in dust. It was hot and Raven was looming over me and I was trapped in his shadow. I looked over at Raven as he took a pull off of his cigar then exhaling the silver smoke towards my face. 'Take the fucking gun and shoot!' he told me through an evil grin. I never held a gun before and this really wasn't a gun - it was a Mac 10 submachine gun. I wasn't sure what was more intimidating, Raven or the fucking gun. In one fast movement Raven pushed the gun into my chest and began to laugh. I held it in front of me and then placed my finger on the trigger. 'Pull! Squeeze it! Fucking shoot, shoot!' Raven was behind me, screaming. I didn't pull the trigger. I received a flick to my ear. I held on tightly to the gun, exhaled and pulled the trigger. There is rapid sound of bangs, shells are flying around me like a halo, more dust and Raven is laughing. The power of the Mac 10 backs me up by about five paces. Then silence. I look up at Raven and the rush hits me hard. It's like a new a drug and my head swirls as the adrenalin pumps through me. I can see in Raven's eyes we have just connected and I now know what he already knew. It's the rush, the reaction and it's just as powerful as the gun or Raven himself. He asks if I want to shoot another clip and I reply: 'Fuck yeah!' Raven then fires off a few clips himself; we finish up and go back to the studio in search of wine and to hear what Al has mixed down. This was a first for me and Raven was proud he pushed me to it. Over the last two years we kept in touch. For as big and intimidating as Raven was he was very real and super fucking cool. I enjoyed the time I spent with him and was my tour guide through the madness. Watching him play bass was like watching him shot that Mac 10. He attacked his bass, he played with deadly precision and he took no prisoners.
Bang! Bang! There can only be one Raven. Anybody who knew this fucker knows I speak the truth. We also know we were better off to have known Raven than not to know Raven. Bang! Bang! When I cross over to the other side I'm looking forward to squeezing off clips again with Raven. Bang! Bang! Indeed. R.I.P fucker..."
Donnie (aka "DVS")
(Pitbull Daycare bassist)
"We're all bummed in the Pitbull Daycare camp, although we spent a short time with Raven on the Ministry/Revco tour last year, right off the bat he made us feel quite welcome and like family! I have an autographed head stock of the bass he smashed at a House of Blues gig that I will cherish! He was no holds barred in yer face, like me or f*%k off ya bloody wanker attitude but also the caring big brother that would kick your ass if you messed with me. As members of the metal/ industrial community and of course a bassist, he was an inspiration. We will miss him. As Raven would say, 'Is it 420 yet?' Yes it is! Time to drink and smoke to my friend. Cheers!"
October File
(John Watt, Matt Lerwill, Ben Hollyer and Steve Beatty)
"We mourn the passing of a hero and friend. It was a great honour that Paul liked our band and always had kind words of support for us. We will miss him, a gentleman and a genuinely nice human being. Our deepest condolences to Paul's family, we wish them our very best in this difficult time. Rest in Peace mate."
En Esch
(Slick Idiot vocalist)
"Paul, Thanks for the wonderful times we had. It's not often that I feel so comfortable with someone as I did with you. You will stay special to me. I'm gonna miss you."
Dean Karr
(director, photographer)
"I've known Paul since 1995. We met here in L.A. and immediately went on to make the strangest video of my career for another friend of ours who is no longer with us anymore, Japanese superstar Hide. Ray McVeigh, Raven and I were three peas in a pod constantly up to practical jokes and shenanigans. Raven, you are always my brother. The world is crushed right now at your loss. You left us wayyyyy too early, but I will see youagain. God, you delivered the most monstrous bass sound the world ever heard and your music will live forever and ever. Love you Beastmaster, I'll never forget the laughs."
Steve Beatty
(October File bassist, Plastic Head Distributor and Record Label founder)
"I just want to remember Paul as a great guy who I thought the world of, always had time for me, always had a smile on his face when he saw me and was always great to be around. He was a hero of mine being in Killing Joke then after we got to know each other he became Paul who was this great bloke I knew that was just an awesome bloke, wicked sense of humour and all round top fella. I don't have a bad memory of Paul, just good ones. I loved Paul for the guy he was to me, I admired Paul for all his musical achievements but I loved the guy for being that great, lovely gentle man I knew. We shall all miss Paul, the world seems an emptier place for his passing. I raise my glass to Paul and wish him safe and easy passage on his next voyage."
Matrin Atkins
(Murder Inc. drummer, Pigface founder and leader)
"Paul was an amazing bass player, but he didn't really seem to try at it, just picking it up and playing with a quarter. My drums were louder when we played together, we just meshed, cool as fuck. His passing really hit me in the nuts, our dna is mixed up on many albums, the realisation that it won't be again is pretty tough to bear, it makes me wonder what the fuck I was doing. He was a spark, a bright halogen beam of light, he embodied that much overused word - charisma. He was a pirate (a rogue Jolly Roger said). I think his time was still to come. As the world crumbles expands and narrows he was just exactly the kind of guy you want on your crew. He made graphics for Pigface shirts and designed the Killing Joke Extremeties cover and a couple of shirts for Killing Joke too, he was always doing something. Anyway, I'm starting to ramble and feeling all of this again, my heart goes out to his family and his kids. I liked the end of Al's words, you are right, he's up there, smiling, half way through the other band's rider and ordering room service. Peace, love, respect and condolances to all affected by this sad, sad passing."
